Pewter is a mixture of metals and alloy containing mostly tin (zinc) but also metals like lead, bismuth, copper, antimony and even silver. Antimony, bismuth and copper are used to increase the hardness of the pewter. The more lead it contains, the softer the pewter. The higher the lead content in pewter, the more it holds a health risk and should not be used for food and beverages. Pewter also has a low melting point, about 200 degrees, depending on the metal mixture. Pewter comes from the non-scientific denomination for zinc, “spelter”.
Pewter products are mostly used as decoration in cutlery, home design, business signs, decorations at functions, decorative insertion into other art and so forth.
